Today we step from behind the cheese counter and if you don’t know her, introduce you to Award-Winning San Francisco Chronicle Columnist, Janet Fletcher. And if you do know her, perhaps you’ll learn something new.
Janet lives, gardens and enjoys life in the Napa Valley in her home with a big kitchen and an even larger garden. She grows vegetables and picks fruit from the trees that grace her yard. She also develops new recipes, cooks with her winemaking husband and writes her weekly cheese reviews.
The first cheese book that The Lady and I bought was Janet’s ” Cheese and Wine”. We also downloaded her “Cheese Course” to our I-Pod and refer to it frequently when writing our own column here. Her new book,” Cheese and Beer” will hit the stands on April 15th and you can buy all three below by clicking on the amazon icon.
Janet has been honored three times with The James Beard Award for her writing and she has also received The Bert Green Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
Janet graciously took time from her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us:
Your favorite cheese pairing: The cheese stands alone.
Your favorite cheese plate: Big Woods Blue, honey, roasted hazelnuts. Basta.
Your favorite grilled cheese: My husband’s homemade bread, sauerkraut, Comte. And a bottle of Ommegang Hennepin.
Tell us one little known non-cheese related thing about yourself: I brake for antique shops.
If you could have dinner with any famous person living or historical, who would it be and why? Our president. I just adore the guy.
Please check out Janet’s website and her weekly cheese article at the San Francisco Chronicle.
