Hey!!! In Lavonia, Georgia, It’s American Cheese Month!!!

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release

Re: American Cheese Month in Lavonia

I’d like to thank The Mayor, City Manager and Council for joining other states and cities in proclaiming October American Cheese Month.

“American Cheese Month is a grassroots celebration of North America’s delicious and diverse cheeses, and the farmers, cheesemakers, retailers, cheesemongers, and chefs who bring them to your table. During American Cheese Month, the hope is:

  • To recognize and raise awareness of the quality and diversity of American cheeses.
  • To support and promote great cheese, local foods, family farms, traditional methods, and sustainable production models
  • To generate funding for the nonprofit American Cheese Education Foundation”*

To that end, I have partnered with other Lavonia and Franklin County businesses and organizations to celebrate American Cheese Month:

This Friday, I will be sampling Cabot 3-year cheddar at Blue Haven Bee in Canon from 4 to 6. Stop by for a free taste and to enjoy one of their wines, meads or craft beers. More fun than the Armadillo, although I have never been there.

Next week I will be teaching a Cheese 101 course at the Welcome Neighbor Club’s monthly potluck dinner meeting. Please join us at the community center Tuesday, October 9th at 630pm for dinner and then a short Cheese class. You bring the covered dish and I’ll bring the cheese.

Friday, October 12th, I’ll be debuting my new line of cheese boards at Sweet Combs of Honey from 4pm to 6pm. Made from wood slabs left me by my dad, whom many of you knew, my cheese boards come in many sizes and are ideal for your food-service needs. We’ll also be serving cheese, charcuterie, jams and crackers.

Finally, on Saturday the 20th, I have teamed with Blue Haven Bee Company in Canon to present Cheese Table Grazing with honey, wine and mead. I’ll be creating three large grazing tables filled with more than 300 pounds of cheese from 10 cheesemakers, jams, crackers plus olives, chocolates and other specialty foods that pair well with cheese. Included in the evening will be 8 wheels of Harbison, the 2018 Best of Show winner at the ACS. We will also have 25 pounds of Wisconsin cheese curds – something rare here in Georgia. The event ticket will include a glass of wine or mead. Reservations are required as space is limited. Phone 706 245 6586 or email bluehavenbeecompany@gmail.com to make reservations. $40 per person and you must be 21 years old to attend. One glass of wine or mead is included with each reservation.

Part of the proceeds from these events will be donated to the Cheese Study Group non-profit scholarship fund through the American Cheese Education Foundation to fund scholarships for Cheese Professionals who wish to sit for the American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional exam. In the last two years, the scholarship fund has fully or partially funded 10 scholarships.
