Sweet Combs of Honey and Marcella the Cheesemonger’s “Excellent Wine and Cheese Adventure”

Sip N Shop Mimosa Saturdays

LaDonna, Co-Owner of Sweet Combs of Honey and I are in the final preparations for our February Excellent Wine and Cheese Adventure: Friday, February 12 “Brie My Valentine”. We will be pairing brie  with a selection of handmade chocolates and bubbly. Brie, chocolates, nuts and fruit plus a glass of bubbly with each reservation. $35. Reservations necessary and limited to accommodate social distancing. 706 356 2398 to secure your seat.

Last night LaDonna hosted our second “Excellent Wine and Cheese Adventure” and it was another successful fun evening (socially distanced, of course, throughout the sales floor of SCOH in Downtown Lavonia). Sadly, with the virus, I did not attend – The Man and I are waiting to take the vaccine – gotta see more side effects before we take the plunge…

Painting Class at SCOH

Starting in March, we will host a wine and cheese tasting event the third Monday of each month, featuring different wines and cheeses each month and fun specialty food items that also pair well with the “stars” of the evening.

We will also begin taking reservations for a monthly wine and cheese subscription box next month to launch just in time for spring events at home and on the lake.

In case you are not familiar with this magical shop in Downtown Lavonia, Sweet Combs of Honey began as beekeepers and has evolved into the “Go To” place for local and regional artists to showcase their talent… from jewelry to baskets, to pottery to paintings and local and regional specialty foods. In 2020, SCOH was voted Best Gift Shop and Best Honey Shop by the readers of the Franklin County Citizen Leader Newspaper.

The line of honey, jams, crackers and other specialty items (including cheese and charcuterie curated by me) are clean and many organic. One line of honey is CBD-infused.

Currently SCOH features  thirty+ artists. I have been associated with SCOH for the past two years and showcased some of the artists in this 2019 article.

Tucked in the back of SCOH is the Honey Bee Cafe open Monday through Friday for lunch and Saturday for both breakfast and lunch. The cafe features soup, salads and sandwiches. On Saturday the breakfast fare includes biscuits and gravy and a side of grits. The Man and I have had the biscuits and gravy and they are the best in Lavonia and we’ve tasted them all. Saturday, February 13th, the Honey Bee Cafe will be open for a special Valentine’s Day dinner. Reservations are necessary. 706 356 2398.

Local Potter, Chad Whitworth of Nevermore Studios, has placed one of his wheels inside Sweet Combs of Honey. He teaches classes Tuesday/Wednesday/ Thursdays in the afternoon: introduction to the wheel, hand building/sculpting and specializes in alternative firings: raku, saggar and barrel firing. You can find Chad in the SCOH pottery studio or his home studio working most any day of the week! Saturday is a prime day to see him throw. Chad also provides private classes for groups of any size.

Roses and Rose Sipping

This Friday, January 22nd, join Chad at SCOH to creates roses and sip French Rose wine. 706 356 2398 to reserve your seat.

LaDonna and I can tailor private cheese, chocolate and wine tastings for your special events. Add to your tasting event a pottery or painting class – a fun way to celebrate your birthday, graduation or retirement. Minimums are necessary; at least 6 persons up to 15 to meet Georgia State Social Distancing guidelines.

Adding to our monthly wine and cheese adventures, other regular events include Mimosa Saturday’s Sip n Shop; Wine and Chocolate Tastings; Cheese Samplings most Fridays or Saturdays; Pottery Classes; Painting Classes; Calligraphy Classes; Terrarium Classes. LaDonna and the gang at SCOH have other ideas up their sleeves which will further cement in your mind… “I wonder what SCOH is doing today? Better check it out!!”

In the Spring and Summer, Ladonna has fresh herbs, plants, cut flowers and local fruits and vegetables.

The Man, aka Peter M. Wright, has written his first novel: Gold Fever, available at amazon.com as a kindle book for only $2.99.

Written in the flavor of one of our favorite movies, Romancing the StoneGold Fever is a romantic adventure that brings together an archeologist looking to establish his name in his field and a rock star on the verge of burn-out.

In GOLD FEVER  an Archeologist motivated by a newly discovered clue, searches for a fabled Native American Legend – the long ago lost Seven Golden Cities of Cibola. While the Archeologist seeks to prove the legend is actually true, he is constantly under attack by a second group seeking the treasure.
