Sugar Mountain and Pure Food

 Kurt Dammeier came from a family involved in food manufacturing and printing. When the printing business closed, Kurt decided to open a cheesemaking business, even though he had no experience. He enrolled in the cheesemaking program at WSU. After finishing the program, he secured prime real estate at Pike’s Place Market and hired Brad Sinko as his Chief Cheesemaker. (Brad had grown up in the cheesemaking business at Bandon Cheese in Oregon. Brad would later return to Bandon to head-up cheesemaking at Face Rock Creamery.**)

From Beecher’s Handmade Cheese, Kurt became an advocate of the “clean food” movement which he coined into “Pure Food” through his Sugar Mountain family of food producers. The family includes Beecher’s, The Butcher’s Table, Mishima Reserve, Pasta and Co. and Beecher’s Loft.  All of these food producers and suppliers promote food free of additives. From the Sugar Mountain website:

“We believe that most food additives are unhealthy, unsafe and mask a lack of true nutritional value in today’s processed foods. We also believe that additives may cause innumerable adverse reactions, including hyperactivity in children, allergies, asthma, obesity, migraines and disease. Some additives are even carcinogenic or toxic. Unfortunately, we’ve found that on occasion additive manufacturers and the government agencies that regulate them dismiss the detrimental health effects of additives, stating that they would need to be consumed in very high quantities to cause allergic reactions or serious illness.’
